Schizophrenic Disorder and HLA

Abstract
Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) complex is a highly polymorphic gene cluster controlling cell surface antigens and complement factors, which is located on the short arm of chromosome 6 at a distance of about 20 cM from the centromere.
HLA antigens are the major determinants of transplant compatibility. They are glycoprotein structures found on the surface of all nucleated cells. Everyone inherits 4 antigens at 4 seperate gene loci rom each parent, possessing 8 if completely heterogenous.
The demonstration of associations between HLA antigens and a number of diseases has encourged a search for similar associations with psychiatric disease. While there have been a number of reported associations between specific HLA antigens and schizophrenic disorder, the findings have not been consistent.
In this paper we have reviewed HLA antigen and the association between HLA antigens and schizophrenic disorder.
